The AV Booster is a device released by NEC to allow the PC Engine to output via composite video. The standard console has only RF output, meaning at the time, this device was the only means of getting a cleaner picture from the console. This was also the only means of achieving stereo sound, though not all games support it (and even fewer did before this device's release).
The CoreGrafx and its successors have composite outputs as standard, making the AV Booster redundant for newer PC Engine systems. All CD-ROM² setups also offer composite output.
