The PC-6601 is essentially a re-badged PC-6001 mkII, and so much of its software originated from the earlier system (it can also run most PC-6001 and PC-6001 mkII software through external cassette decks or disk drives). It differs, however, by the inclusion of a 3½-inch floppy disk drive; the first NEC computer to include such a feature. PC-6601-specific software was usually distributed on that format, and as no 3½-inch disk drives were officially produced for the PC-6001 mkII, means a small library of software exists solely for the PC-6601.
The PC-6601 did not replace the PC-6001 line; it was sold alongside it, however most software developers of the era just treated it as another means of playing PC-6001 mkII games, rather than tapping into its exclusive features. A similar fate befell its successor, the PC-6601 SR.
