Psychosis, known as Paranoia (パラノイア) in Japan, is a 1990 shoot-'em-up game for the PC Engine and TurboGrafx-16 by Naxat Soft.

Story

The player is trapped within the evil part of their own mind, and the evil force of this mind, "The Devil Ugar", plans to take over the player's mind completely, robbing them of their thought and free will. Not willing to give up, the player creates a ship with their own mind to fight through their subconcious and free their soul from Ugar.

Gameplay

Psychosis is a horizontal shooter through five stages taking place within the player's mind, using the D-Pad to move the player's ship and the button to shoot. Collecting certain power-up items (W, T or B) will summon two indestructible satellites that will orbit the main ship. These satellites can be used as a form of defense against enemy bullets, and their positions can be rotated clockwise by pressing . The items collected will also empower these satellites with different weapons, and collecting more of the same kind of item will increase the associated weapon's attack power.

The player starts the game with three ships, and will gain an extra ship for every 50,000 points scored. When the player loses all of their ships, they can continue from the beginning of the last stage they were playing up to three times.

Items

Speed
Increases the ship's speed, with no speed limit.
Wide Beam
A wide-ranged laser beam weapon. Can be upgraded up to three times.
Thunder

Back Laser

Barrier
Forms a protective shield around the ship that will absorb bullets, getting weaker with each hit.
