Formation Soccer: Human Cup '90 (フォーメーション・サッカー・ヒューマンカップ'90) is a football game developed and published by Human Entertainment for the PC Engine. Originally released in 1990, it is the first game in Human's Formation Soccer series of football games.

Gameplay

Gameplay screenshot of a match between England and Spain.

Formation Soccer: Human Cup '90 is played from a top-down perspective and adheres to most of the sport's rules. When in control of the ball, pressing performs a strong kick (how long the button is pressed determines how high the ball will fly) while is used to pass the ball and  RUN  switches the pass target. When not in control of the ball, is used to perform a sliding tackle, and  RUN  switches control between players. Pressing  SELECT  pauses the game. When setting up a match, the player(s) can choose which team formation to use and whether to manually control the goalkeeper or not. Players can also choose whether to invert the controls or not.

Matches are split into two halves like the sport itself. When time runs out in the first half, the player(s) will be presented with a half time break in which they can press buttons on a television set to change channels, or press "P" to continue the match. If they spend several minutes on this screen, the referee will appear and automatically press "P" outside of the user's input. The player(s) can then choose to change their formations and goalkeeper settings for the second half.

Ties at the end of a match are always broken with a penalty shootout where both teams take turns taking penalty shots. The team taking the shot aims using the D-Pad and shoots using the button, while the goalkeeper dives with and using the D-Pad to choose the direction to dive in. The team that scores three goals first, or the majority of goals after five turns, is declared the winner - if no goal is scored after five turns, the shootouts will keep on going until either team scores.

Only two modes are available to play. In Exhibition, up to four players (two players per team) can play a single match with any amount of time between 1 and 99 minutes. In Human Cup, one or two players play a series of 15 matches against computer-controlled teams (with each team being played against once), with both halves of a match lasting 5 minutes each. The player(s) will move on to the next match should they win, however they must repeat the match if they lose. Progress in the Human Cup mode is saved via password, which is inputted by entering directions on the D-Pad.
