The PC Engine Duo-R (PCエンジンDuo-R) is a cost-reduced version of the PC Engine Duo, and was released by NEC Home Electronics in March 1993.
The Duo-R is essentially a slightly smaller Duo which removes the headphone socket and locking switch for the CD-ROM drive. It is otherwise exactly the same device, this time in a more rounded, white shell, which became the de-facto PC Engine system for the years which followed.
In June of 1994, the Duo-R was re-released as the PC Engine Duo-RX (PCエンジンDuo-RX), with an Arcade Pad 6 shipping as the main controller. Aside from minor aesthetic differences the Duo-R and Duo-RX are identical, though the Duo-RX has the distinction of being the last officially licensed PC Engine-compatible system to be released in Japan.
