− | + | Valis IV (ヴァリスIV) is an action game and the fourth main release in the Mugen Senshi Valis series, released for CD-ROM² hardware. Unlike Valis II and III, this version was only released in Japan. | |

+ | ==Story== | ||
+ | Centuries ago, a Dark World prince named Galgear (がるぎあ) is driven insane by the power of a magical ring that he inherited from his father, Asfal (アスファー). Galgear starts wars and widespread destruction to grow his power, until he is imprisoned in a giant crystal that is sunk to the bottom of the sea. | ||
+ | |||
+ | Following the events of Valis III, Yuko (優子) has become the goddess of the world of Vecanti, which has enjoyed a period of peace following the downfall of Glames (ぐらめす). However, the peace is broken when the crystal imprisoning Galgear surfaces. Galgear is able to escape, and he raises an army and kidnaps Valna (ヴァルナ), the Queen of Vecanti. A resistance movement forms, led by Cham (ちゃむ), to fight Galgear. A young warrior named Lena (レナ) and her sister Amu (アム) decide to rescue Valna. | ||

+ | The game is a platformer. It features a new cast of playable characters. At the start of the game, the player can control Lena and her sister Amu, but they are soon joined by Asfal, the father of antagonist Galgear, and told that they must retrieve the Valis sword from its guardian, Yuko, in order to defeat Galgear. Each character has different characteristics, and the stage design encourages the player to switch between them frequently according to their strengths and weaknesses. For example, Lena has a slide that lets her fit through tight spaces, Amu has a double jump that can reach higher platforms, and Asfal has a downward projectile that can hit enemies on lower ground. The cast from Valis III appears in story scenes to help the new protagonists. Animated and voice-acted cutscenes portray the story as the player progresses through the game. | ||
+ | |||
+ | The characters move with left and right and crouch with down. They jump with I and jump higher when the button is held for longer. The characters attack using their standard weapons with II. Each character has a different weapon with unique properties, and the attack power can be upgraded by collecting items. The player can switch the active character by pressing Run while standing still (the game can be paused by pressing Select). The active character cannot be switched during boss fights. | ||
+ | |||
+ | Characters also have special magical abilities, which are cast with up+II if the character has enough magic points. The magic point gauge increases over time, but it empties when the character takes damage or when the player switches characters. The magic point gauge starts at four units long, which is enough to cast a level one spell, but it can be increased in length by collecting items, enabling the characters to cast level two and level three spells (so long as the character has enough magic points available). Each character's magic has a different elemental affinity. | ||
+ | |||
+ | Characters have a hit point gauge that indicates their health. They lose hit points when they take damage from enemies, but they can restore health or extend the length of the hit point gauge by finding items. The characters share their hit points and magic points. They lose a life when they lose all of their hit points and must restart the stage. Additionally, each stage has a time limit, and the player also loses a life when time runs out. Characters lose their upgrades when they lose a life. The game ends if the player runs out of lives, but it can be continued from the beginning of the last stage. The game automatically saves the player's progress to the console's internal memory, so it can also be continued after powering the system off. | ||

+ | ==Versions== | ||
+ | The game was adapted into Super Valis IV for the Super NES in 1992. However, this version includes numerous changes, such as removing Amu and Asfal as playable characters, adding an item system that gives Lena limited use of their abilities, and removing Lena's slide move. The storyline was simplified (and the voice-acted cutscenes removed to fit the cartridge format), and many of the stages were altered or removed. | ||

Valis IV (ヴァリスIV) is an action game and the fourth main release in the Mugen Senshi Valis series, released for CD-ROM² hardware. Unlike Valis II and III, this version was only released in Japan.

Story
Centuries ago, a Dark World prince named Galgear (がるぎあ) is driven insane by the power of a magical ring that he inherited from his father, Asfal (アスファー). Galgear starts wars and widespread destruction to grow his power, until he is imprisoned in a giant crystal that is sunk to the bottom of the sea.
Following the events of Valis III, Yuko (優子) has become the goddess of the world of Vecanti, which has enjoyed a period of peace following the downfall of Glames (ぐらめす).
Gameplay
The game is a platformer.
The characters move with ← and → and crouch with ↓. They jump with Ⅰ and jump higher when the button is held for longer. The characters attack using their standard weapons with Ⅱ. Each character has a different weapon with unique properties, and the attack power can be upgraded by collecting items. The player can switch the active character by pressing RUN while standing still (the game can be paused by pressing SELECT ). The active character cannot be switched during boss fights.
Characters also have special magical abilities, which are cast with ↑+Ⅱ if the character has enough magic points.
Characters have a hit point gauge that indicates their health.
Playable characters
Lena | |
---|---|
Lena is a 16-year-old girl who was raised since childhood to be a warrior. She has joined Cham's resistance against Galgear. She plays similarly to Yuko in the previous games. She can slide along the ground with ↓+Ⅰ, which lets her evade enemies, move over gaps in the terrain, or fit through tight passages. She is invulnerable while sliding. She is armed with a sword that shoots crescent-shaped waves when it is swung. Her projectiles are tall and cover a larger area than those of the other characters, but they also have the shortest range. After she receives the Valis sword from Yuko, her armor changes. | |
Amu | |
Amu is a 14-year-old-girl and the younger sister of Lena. She was also raised to be a warrior and fights alongside her sister in Cham's resistance movement. She is the smallest and most agile character. She can somersault by pressing Ⅰ in midair before reaching the apex of the jump, which allows her to jump higher and enables her to reach higher places than the other characters can. She fights using bird-shaped boomerangs that return to her after throwing, which lets her hit enemies multiple times with a single throw. Her weapon is also capable of hitting enemies from behind that are guarding from the front. It has long range but covers a small area. | |
Asfal | |
Asfar is the father of antagonist Galgear and was once the king of the Dark World. He is the largest of the playable characters, which makes him unable to duck under attacks that Lena and Amu can easily evade. However, his armor lets him takes less damage than the other characters and gives him immunity to spikes, laser walls, and slippery floors. He carries a trident spear, which launches wolf-shaped projectiles at a downward angle. These projectiles are long-ranged and move along the ground. This weapon is more difficult to use against flying enemies, but it is very effective against smaller enemies or enemies on lower ground (and it can circumvent enemies that are guarding from the front by hitting them from above). |
Magical abilities
Each character has different magical abilities. The character casts the highest level spell for the amount of MP available.
The magic point bar is blue when the character can cast a level 1 spell, which costs 4 MP.
The magic point bar is yellow when the character can cast a level 2 spell, which costs 8 MP.
The magic point bar is red when the character can cast a level 3 spell, which costs 12 MP and reduces the MP gauge by one level.
Lena | |
---|---|
Lena's magic element is thunder. Her level 1 ability, the Star Plasma (スタープラズマ), shoots a ball of lighting straight ahead. Her level 2 ability, the Rolling Spark (ローリングスパーク), summons a ball of lighting to spin in circles above her. Her level 3 ability, the Thunderblast (サンダーブラスト), calls a rain of lightning balls from the sky. | |
Amu | |
Amu's magic element is fire. Her level 1 ability, the Burning Ball (バーニングボール), shoots two fireballs ahead in a spread. Her level 2 ability, the Corona Splash (コロナスプラッシュ), shoots three fireballs ahead in a spread. Her level 3 ability, the Fire Hurricane (ファイヤーハリケーン), summons four fireballs that spiral around her. | |
Asfal | |
Asfal's magic element is ice. His level 1 ability, the Cerberus Wave (ケルベロスウェーヴ), shoots a burst of wolf projectiles in an arc. They are initially close to each other but spread apart as they travel away from Asfal. His level 2 ability, the Spiral Fang (スパイラルファング), shoots a single wolf projectile that spins in circles as it flies away from him. His level 3 ability, the Death Vibration (デス・バイヴレーション), conjures two walls of fire that move away from him. |
Items
Small Herb (スモールハーブ) | |

Versions
The game was adapted into Super Valis IV for the Super NES in 1992.
