If anyone stumbles upon this and thinks they can do a better job in any of the following sections, be my guest :p. This is only the page where i'm thinking out loud, i aint calling dibs on anything

NEC's computers
 +
A page for every NEC model (that we could care about) seems like a much more doable goal (and also as important as every game):
 +
* TK-80: definitively important, fully covered now! only lacks peripheral and internal component coverage
 +
* PC-8000 series: fully covered, only lacks peripheral and internal component coverage
 +
* PC-6000 series: (mostly) fully covered, lacks peripheral and internal component coverage and THE IRAQI VERSION
 +
* PC-8800 series: lacks a few models, lacks peripheral and internal component coverage.
 +
* PC-8800 series: lacks a few models, lacks peripheral and internal component coverage.
 +
* PC-6600 series: fully covered, lacks peripheral and internal component coverage.
 +
* PC-2000: nothing
 +
* PC-8200/PC-8300/PC-8400/PC-8500: nothing
 +
* PC-100: lacks peripheral and internal component coverage.
 +
* PC-9800 series: fully covered, peripheral coverage only
 +
* PC-H98 series: nothing
 +
* PC-9821 series: so much to do
 +
Others:
 +
* APC series: nothing
 +
* Epson Clones: nothing
 +
* DualStation: nothing
 +
* N5200: nothing
 +
* FC-9800/SV-9801/SC-9801/RC-9801/OP-98...: nothing
 +
Probably not important/not currently important
 +
* Mainframes and PC-98NX

Neo Kobe
 +
I should just update my research flow to always start with the Neo Kobe collections because everything that ever existed is probably in there. Anyways, reminder (to future me probably) to mirror all the stuff on here

* PC-100 ----> ZD-3100

 +
* PC-8801 ---> ZD-2500
 +
* PC-8001 ---> ZD-2000
 +
and according to this , there's also ZD-1110, ZD-1220 units; perhaps they're the pc-6001 and 6001 MkII?
 +

 +
The APC series on the American side, more N5200 than PC98; but still. Specifically the APC III which seems to be an American PC-9801, even has something similar to the PC-9801-26(K) .

MORE STUFF ON THE AMERICAN SIDE;BOTH the PC-88 and PC-98 Series also made it overseas??? PC-8801mkIIAR and PC-9801VM2E respectively.

PC-98 Game Documentation
 +
Closest thing to a comprehensive list of games for the PC-98, the second link's probably more useful :p
 +

 +

 +
Obviously compare it with the internal lists that are alr on here :v
 +

 +
Doujin coverage is lacking, this fills that niche
 +

 +
accidentally deleted this link from the list down under, it's been extremely invaluable as a jumping off point so lemme just put it back in here (its PC Engine focused but no one will notice)
 +

 +
Random stumble, may or may not contain useful stuff.
 +
Emulation
 +
Taking a detour from what this section usually tries to cover, but i was thinking about emulators and our coverage of games; The ePC-9801 series of emulators covers specific models. Seeing that no one who edits this wiki has actual hardware, i think learning how to set this up right could do wonders for our compatibility coverage. (not to mention our emulation coverage on the wiki is nearly non-existant, time to fix it :p)
 +

 +
Redistribution of Games
 +
This one is a headache; some games were resold under many different brands including: APROS, CAV, SOFTBOX, and others i havent seen but were mentioned in this thread ..., and who knows when they were released. But they sure are within the scope of this wiki so wooooooo
 +

 +
The RPG Maker Program and their Games
 +
ascii has like 5 different programs they made to allow people to make RPGs easily on NEC PCs, one of them was even released on the PC88 apparently! A lot of these games didnt get physical releases and were available through magazine releases or freely online, so yeah, another thing to keep an eye out for.
 +

 +
I've dedicated nearly an entire day to track another PC 98 RPG Maker game, and i managed to find another title that isn't corpse party, and trying to run it was a nightmare! 0 information anywhere on the internet :v, but still within the wiki's scope so hooray
 +

 +
(Silly update on the remark above ^ turns out it was on Neo Kobe's archive after all :p)
 +

EVERYTHING ELSE
 +
Game Center CX
 +
Game Center CX
 +

 +
Floppy Vending Machines
 +
So... , this will need to be covered on the wiki eventually, but there's so little docummentation anywhere, Takeru vending machines sold PC-98 games alongside other stuff and thats basically all i know at this point.
 +

 +
On this point again, I think i should probably mirror the issues Of Takeru Press/World on here, they're within the scope of the wiki if im not mistaken.
 +

 +
The Touhou Games
 +
They're probably the most important games released on the PC-98, alongside stuff like Doukyuusei and Yu-No. Will most definitely take my time to cover them, and i'm surprised there were no pages about any of the games yet!
 +

 +
Unreleased games
 +
* Imperial Force meant for release on Jan 1994
 +

 +
Kisekae Set System
 +
I've spent this entire day researching it and its fascinating, the origin of all those flash dress up games lies here! But it's a confusing subject to cover, so i'll leave it for when i get a better idea.
 +

 +
Project EGG
 +
There's like, 500 titles over there that are related to NEC's Consoles and Home Computers, not including ones that were delisted; this is gonna take a while.
 +

 +
Diskmags
 +
LOGIN Sofcom's issues were already alluded to in some other articles relating to the RPG Maker section somewhere above this, but there's many many more that need to be covered; Disc Station is the main one probably, but there's some wacky ones like this one for the PC Engine. I think this counts as aftermarket? It was released in 2013 after all :p
 +

 +
On the Disc Station note, mirroring everything on here seems like a high priority, not only that, but this blog points out some details that are extremely useful , apparently they also jumped to a different blog later on so maybe some new info on here, havent checked yet . Biggest shout out to Super! Lonely Terminal this is so much stuff that needs to be mirrored on top of other stuff that i already linked above
 +

 +
ITS A NEVER ENDING ABYSS, Project EGG revived Disc Station for a bit and distrubted some games in a quarterly

Latest revision as of 13:01, 15 October 2024

Heyo I'm Saad, hopefully this wiki gets as active as its sister sites because this is fascinating :p

If anyone stumbles upon this and thinks they can do a better job in any of the following sections, be my guest :p. This is only the page where i'm thinking out loud, i aint calling dibs on anything

Current Focus (probably)

NEC's computers

A page for every NEC model (that we could care about) seems like a much more doable goal (and also as important as every game):

Others:

Probably not important/not currently important

 • Mainframes and PC-98NX

Stuff for later

Neo Kobe

I should just update my research flow to always start with the Neo Kobe collections because everything that ever existed is probably in there[1]. Anyways, reminder (to future me probably) to mirror all the stuff on here[2]

Main Stuff

PC-98 Hardware Documentation

Seems like a good place to start[3] [4]

Its gonna take a while to understand the hardware side wont it [5]

Getting more ideas on how to improve our hardware coverage [6] [7]

things to mirror [8] [9] [10]

Dip switches :p[11]

This guy has some great scans of the covers and backs of those model catalogues, could be a good fill in untill scans of the full catalogues are available [12]

still trying to understand the later sound boards [13] this looks like a good list to use in finishin that sound board page [14]

non-PC-98 Hardware Documentation

list of peripherals and accessories for the PC-8801 [15]

PC-98 Hardware Documentation 2: International Edition

[16] Chinese Versions of NEC home computers

 • PC-100 ----> ZD-3100
 • PC-9801 ---> ZD-3000/JH-3000B
 • PC-8801 ---> ZD-2500
 • PC-8001 ---> ZD-2000

and according to this [17], there's also ZD-1110, ZD-1220 units; perhaps they're the pc-6001 and 6001 MkII?

[18] The APC series on the American side, more N5200 than PC98; but still. Specifically the APC III which seems to be an American PC-9801, even has something similar to the PC-9801-26(K) [19].

MORE STUFF ON THE AMERICAN SIDE;BOTH the PC-88 and PC-98 Series also made it overseas??? PC-8801mkIIAR[20] and PC-9801VM2E[21] respectively.

PC-98 Game Documentation

[22][23]Closest thing to a comprehensive list of games for the PC-98, the second link's probably more useful :p

[24] [25] [26] [27] Obviously compare it with the internal lists that are alr on here :v

[28] Doujin coverage is lacking, this fills that niche

[29] accidentally deleted this link from the list down under, it's been extremely invaluable as a jumping off point so lemme just put it back in here (its PC Engine focused but no one will notice)

[30] Random stumble, may or may not contain useful stuff.

Emulation

Taking a detour from what this section usually tries to cover, but i was thinking about emulators and our coverage of games; The ePC-9801 series of emulators[31] covers specific models. Seeing that no one who edits this wiki has actual hardware, i think learning how to set this up right could do wonders for our compatibility coverage. (not to mention our emulation coverage on the wiki is nearly non-existant, time to fix it :p)

Redistribution of Games

This one is a headache; some games were resold under many different brands including: APROS, CAV, SOFTBOX, and others i havent seen but were mentioned in this thread [32]..., and who knows when they were released. But they sure are within the scope of this wiki so wooooooo

The RPG Maker Program and their Games

ascii has like 5 different programs they made to allow people to make RPGs easily on NEC PCs, one of them was even released on the PC88 apparently! A lot of these games didnt get physical releases and were available through magazine releases or freely online, so yeah, another thing to keep an eye out for.

I've dedicated nearly an entire day to track another PC 98 RPG Maker game, and i managed to find another title that isn't corpse party, and trying to run it was a nightmare! 0 information anywhere on the internet :v, but still within the wiki's scope so hooray

(Silly update on the remark above ^ turns out it was on Neo Kobe's archive after all :p)

Lost Sheep PC98 Title.PNG

[33] stuff related to RPG Maker, Doujins, Disc mags and so much more

EVERYTHING ELSE

Game Center CX

Game Center CX

Floppy Vending Machines

So... [34], this will need to be covered on the wiki eventually, but there's so little docummentation anywhere, Takeru vending machines sold PC-98 games alongside other stuff and thats basically all i know at this point.

On this point again, I think i should probably mirror the issues Of Takeru Press/World on here, they're within the scope of the wiki if im not mistaken.

The Touhou Games

They're probably the most important games released on the PC-98, alongside stuff like Doukyuusei and Yu-No. Will most definitely take my time to cover them, and i'm surprised there were no pages about any of the games yet!

Unreleased games

 • Imperial Force[35] meant for release on Jan 1994[36]

Kisekae Set System

I've spent this entire day researching it and its fascinating, the origin of all those flash dress up games lies here! But it's a confusing subject to cover, so i'll leave it for when i get a better idea.

Project EGG

There's like, 500 titles over there that are related to NEC's Consoles and Home Computers, not including ones that were delisted; this is gonna take a while.

Diskmags

LOGIN Sofcom's issues were already alluded to in some other articles relating to the RPG Maker section somewhere above this, but there's many many more that need to be covered; Disc Station is the main one probably, but there's some wacky ones like this one for the PC Engine[37]. I think this counts as aftermarket? It was released in 2013 after all :p

On the Disc Station note, mirroring everything on here seems like a high priority[38], not only that, but this blog points out some details that are extremely useful [39], apparently they also jumped to a different blog later on so maybe some new info on here, havent checked yet [40]. Biggest shout out to Super! Lonely Terminal this is so much stuff that needs to be mirrored on top of other stuff that i already linked above[41]

ITS A NEVER ENDING ABYSS, Project EGG revived Disc Station for a bit and distrubted some games in a quarterly

basis[42]

Finish(ed) the NEC anniversary list

Fact check the release date first obviously, but a future to-do list of possible releases on each of the missing days

UPDATE:I guess this is a vague todo list now :p
