In the options menu, set Player to "01" and Sound Test to "02", then wait about 30 seconds. A sound will play and the lives setting will now display 09 lives, but attempting to change the lives setting will lock the maximum lives back to 5, requiring the player to enter the code again.

99 lives

On the title screen, press Ⅰ 15 times followed by Ⅱ 25 times (if the demo plays, skip the demo with  RUN , then continue the code from the last button pressed, e.g. press Ⅱ 15 more times if the last button pressed was the tenth time pressing Ⅱ). A sound will confirm correct entry, and the lives setting in the options menu will now display 99 lives, but attempting to change the lives setting will lock the maximum lives back to 5, requiring the player to enter the code again.
