The Misty franchise is a series of seven graphic adventure games developed and published by Data West. Initially released in 1989 for the PC-8801, PC-9801, and other Japanese home computers, the series spans seven volumes (each containing five individual scenarios) and places players in the role of private detective Kamishiro Ryu.[1]

A distinctive feature of the Misty series is its points-based investigation system. Players begin each scenario with a set number of points, which are deducted with each action taken, such as moving to different locations or gathering information. This system encourages strategic thinking and efficient investigation, as players must carefully consider their actions to conserve points. The investigation process involves selecting locations to explore and gathering necessary information through conversations, rather than traditional command-based interactions.[1]

Once players have collected sufficient evidence and testimonies, they can attempt to solve the mystery by answering questions about the case, including the motive, method, and identity of the perpetrator. Correct answers lead to the resolution of the case and progression to the next scenario, while incorrect answers result in further point deductions and continued investigation. The series challenges players with high difficulty, especially those aiming for high scores, as efficient investigation and accurate deductions are crucial for success.[1]
