Sound Board (サウンドボード) is the name NEC used for the sound cards it released for the PC-9800 series. These sound cards usually used one of three FM synthesizer Yamaha Sound chips; the YM2203, YM2608 or YMF288, and they were either part of an Expansion Board or built into the PC-9800 series models. The original PC-9801 did not have any sound except its Beeper that had a fixed pitch, but following its release, many official and third party sound boards were made.
