Kanji ROM board (漢字ROMボード) is a type of expansion board used in 8-bit and 16-bit computers, including many of NEC's Home Computers. Due to the hardware limitations of these home computers, display of kanji characters needed extra components, usually in the form of two expansion boards, with the first containing the 2000 most common Kanji characters for general use, while the second contained more obscure kanji. These boards usually also contained extra characters, examples include the PC-9801-10 which allowed 63 user-defined characters.
