Genji Tsuushin Agedama (ゲンジ通信あげだま) is a platformer based on the 1991 anime of the same name. The auto scrolling nature of the first four and a half levels combined with Agedama's ability to shoot sometimes causes people to compare it to a shmup. Over the course of the game, Agedama gains themed abilities he can attack with, and the player can select which to use by how long he charges the attack button. This makes it somewhat difficult to pick exactly what you want if it isn't the farthest right power that Agedama currently has.

Gameplay

jumps, attacks, + is a high jump, causes Agedama to roll and  RUN  pauses the game.

The most unique gameplay feature in this game is the weapon charging system. At the top of the screen, there's a series of dots. As you hold the attack button, these fill up from left to right, and what attack you release will be based on which of these is the furthest right highlighted. The main attacks are the larger circles with Japanese characters in them, while the smaller dots let out weaker attacks based on the next large circle. These major attacks are:

か - A series of explosions that shoot out a short distance ahead of Agedama.

た - Five small tornadoes that spread out and cover most of the screen ahead of Agedama.

は - A series of green crescent shapes shoot out straight ahead.

ま - Three genies appear behind Agedama, pause briefly, then fly ahead. This hits most of the screen. While those genies are paused, they will repeatedly hit any enemy they overlap. This makes them very useful against bosses who stay along the edge of the screen.

ら - Lightning travels across the screen, usually hitting everything.

In addition, if you have all five of those options available, Agedama will start flashing if you keep holding the attack button after everything is highlighted. If you release the attack button while this is happening, all action will pause as the screen shakes, a skull shaped mushroom cloud appears on screen, and lighting moves across as in the ら attack. This is the most powerful attack in most situations.

The roll is very useful both defensively and offensively. You do not take damage while rolling, allowing you to pass through projectiles and enemies unharmed, and it hurts enemies that are rolled through. In the speedrun, this is often used against bosses who at some point stand along the edge of the screen.
