Anti-piracy
When the copyright screen appears after the BPS logo during startup, the game performs several tests including checksumming a specific area of RAM to determine whether or not the user is running the game from a genuine disk. If any of the tests fail, the game will replace the credits on the title screen with an endless loop of "BULLET-PROOF SOFTWARE" and "TETRIS IS ONLY 6,800 YEN", with the "line clear" sound effect playing each time the text changes, and prevent the user from starting the game.
Copies of the game that circulate online seem to remove these checks, however it is possible for the user to force the anti-piracy measures by changing two bytes at 33FF in TETRIS.EXE to 90 90[1].
